12 PIECE BOY'S ZOBO BAND, CIRCA 1900

August 4, 1999. I just received the following email and scan from a very generous visitor.

Hi there ! I was just looking over your website and saw your mention of/interest in zobos. I chanced upon an old photograph a few years ago in an antique shop. It looked like a 12-piece boy's band, horns and drums, ca. 1900. Upon cleaning and closer inspection however, I noticed that the cornets had no valves; the trombone "slide" was not connected to the horn, etc. I remembered seeing ads for "zobo bands" in a 1902 Sears catalog reprint... when I looked it up, lo and behold, that's what this was! A "zobo" band ! Cool site! Thanks. Doug Benson Thurmont, MD
